What’s the Deal with Oil Pulling?
To be honest I thought this seemed bizarre when I first read about it. However if it promises to improve my health my interest is immediately piqued!
Oil pulling is a practice that has been adapted from Ayurvedic medicine. It involves swishing or ‘pulling’ unrefined oil around in your mouth for several minutes at a time. After the required length of time (more on that below) you spit the oil out. Sounds simple enough but what’s the point of this strange behaviour I hear you ask??!
Benefits of Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is said to provide several advantages including whiter teeth, healthier gums and a boost in energy levels. It also claims to help decrease the occurrence of migraine headaches, clear the sinuses, and helps with asthma and allergy symptoms. I’m a hayfever sufferer so I will be interested to see if this improves things for me come spring!
It sounds faddish and fandangled but in fact it’s a very ancient practice that has been used with great success for centuries.
How is it Done?
The recommendation is that oil pulling should be performed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Being quite impressed by the above health benefits I decided to give it a go. I must confess my first attempts were a bit half-arsed and I was not consistent with it. I also found digging the oil out of the jar a bit messy and inconvenient. Once I discovered these Keeko oil pulling sachets however I jumped in feet first and haven’t looked back. You can just keep the sachets in the bathroom (part of my problem was I always forgot to do it but now they stare at me every morning so brain is reminded) and do your swishing whilst in the shower. They also have a minty taste which is quite refreshing. I found the straight coconut oil on an empty stomach first thing the morning made me a bit queasy. I have really noticed my mouth feels super clean afterwards and my teeth are noticeably whiter too after 2 weeks of doing this consistently. Best of all this is all natural and does not contain any of the nasties you will find in conventional mouth washes.
Simply swish the oil around your mouth and the oil will start to have a thin and foamy consistency. Keeko say you only need to do it for 5-10 minutes which is about the length of my shower so I get out and then spit it out. Don’t spit it in the sink though or it will block your drain! Either the bin or garden is the way to go.
