The Harmful Chemicals Lurking in your Baby Products
Once I sprouted an offspring 7 years ago I became a lot more conscious of the products we were using in our home. I mean here was this pristine little human person and I felt a huge responsibility not to flood her little body with toxins where I could avoid it. I know many mothers feel the same way. In fact I became a little annoyingly obsessive about it….
The EWG (Environmental Working Group) found that the average child is exposed through body care products to 27 chemicals a day that have not been found safe for children. Say what?!? Many are associated with cancer, brain and nervous system damage, allergies and hormone disruption. Exposure to EDC’s in particular is unsafe for children. Children are arriving at puberty earlier and earlier these days and many health experts are of the view that the onslaught on toxins in our homes are to blame.
What are Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals?
EDC’s are man-made and industrial chemicals that can mimic or interact with the hormones and receptors found within our body. EDC’s can be found in many typical household products including personal care products.
Children are typically more vulnerable to chemicals than adults. A child’s skin is 30 percent thinner than an adult’s, and can absorb greater amounts of chemicals from the skin surface. They breathe in more air (and air pollution) relative to their weight than adults, and the blood-brain barrier that helps block chemicals from penetrating brain tissue is not fully formed until a baby is six months old. Even then, many chemicals cross this barrier and target developing brain tissue, with potential life-long harmful effects. Scary stuff right?!
Effects on Babies and Children
There is no safe level of EDC for adults or children. These chemicals have the ability to affect us in several different ways, and even exposure at low levels can cause serious health problems. Babies and children are particularly vulnerable. If a child is in any way exposed to EDC’s whether through the mother or directly through the products that they are using, it can cause issues with foetal development or contribute to early puberty. Exposure can cause more permanent damage that can also lead to increase the risk for diseases and sickness in the future.
Most conventional baby products contain ingredients that can cause some level of health concern for your child. It is important to buy smart and use these products sparingly (or preferably not at all) to help minimise your child’s exposure to harmful EDC’s.
